How to Choose a Software Company in Mangalore: A Practical Checklist
By LPOINT · · 7 min read
Mangalore has a growing number of software companies, freelancers and agencies. Their quotes for the same project can differ by five times or more, and it is rarely obvious why. This checklist is what we would want a friend to ask before hiring any software company — including us.
1. Ask to see work that is live, not just screenshots
Screenshots and design mock-ups are easy to borrow. Ask for links to systems that are running today, and if possible a short demo with real logins. A company that builds software should be able to show you software. You can see ours on our projects page.
2. Meet the people who will write the code
Many firms win the project with a senior salesperson and hand it to someone you never meet. Ask who the developer or team lead will be, and talk to them. A local company has an advantage here: you can visit the office and sit with the team when something is unclear.
3. Get a written scope before you get a price
A price without a scope is a guess. A good proposal lists every screen or page, every user role, the integrations (payment gateway, SMS, WhatsApp, Tally, GST), what is excluded, and how many rounds of changes are included. If two quotes differ wildly, compare the scopes line by line — the cheaper one usually leaves something out.
4. Confirm who owns the source code, domain and hosting
Your contract should say that the source code, the domain name and the hosting account belong to you once you pay. We regularly meet businesses that cannot change their own website because the domain is registered in a former vendor's name. Insist that the domain is registered with your email address.
5. Ask how changes are handled after launch
Software is never finished. Ask what a small change costs after launch, how quickly urgent bugs are fixed, and whether there is an annual maintenance contract (AMC). A clear AMC is better than vague promises of free support.
6. Check that they understand your business, not just technology
The best sign is that they ask a lot of questions about how your business runs today: who enters data, who approves, which reports the owner looks at, how customers contact you. Software built without these answers looks good in the demo and gets abandoned in a month.
Red flags
- A fixed price quoted over the phone before anyone has understood your requirements.
- No written contract, or a contract that does not mention source code ownership.
- Claims like "500+ happy clients" with no names, links or reviews you can check.
- Pressure to pay 100% upfront. Milestone payments (for example 40/30/20/10) protect both sides.
- Everything is "possible" and nothing is "out of scope".
Questions to ask in the first meeting
- Can you show me two live projects similar to mine?
- Who will build it, and can I speak to them?
- What exactly is included, and what is not?
- How many revision rounds are included?
- Who owns the code, domain and hosting accounts?
- What technology will you use, and can another developer maintain it later?
- How will I see progress — weekly demos, a staging link?
- What is the payment schedule?
- What does support cost after launch?
- How do you back up data?
- Will the website or app be mobile-friendly and fast?
- Will it be set up for Google search from day one?
